If you were searching for the ideal attorney to fight for your rights, you would look for a top-notch professional who is tenacious, who takes the time to really understand your personal situation, and who is compassionate. That perfectly describes Nash Hearing Attorney Devyn Cook. “A lot of our clients feel like they are just a number in the Social Security hamster wheel and that no one is listening to them,” Ms. Cook says. “All of us try to make our clients feel that they are being heard and that we understand their frustration. So, it’s very satisfying when clients express their gratitude to us, not just for helping them get benefits, but for making them feel valuable and understood.”
Having just notched her second year anniversary with the firm, Ms. Cook adeptly manages a full agenda of responsibilities. She meets with clients (currently over the phone, of course, due to the COVID-19 pandemic) to prepare them for their hearings, reviews all client files and medical records, making sure all the necessary documents are in place, writes briefs, and just generally communicates with her clients and co-workers to ensure every client has the very best opportunity to win their case.
Aside from the law, food tops Devyn’s list of interests. “I got a culinary degree after I became a lawyer because I was so passionate about food that I considered being a personal chef. Obviously my plans changed, but the passion is still there.” She also lists travel and language learning among her favorite leisure activities. “Of course the current situation has changed travel,” she explains, “but the idea of exploring other landscapes, cultures, and food is really exciting. Whenever I travel to another country, I try to learn enough of the language to be polite and to show that I’ve made an effort. I don’t retain much once I get back, but it’s fun to learn. And of course I start researching the food well in advance!”
Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Devyn is a die-hard Buckeye fan and she says sheepishly “for reasons that I can’t explain I am a Cleveland Browns fan (one day it will pay off, I know it).” She enjoys running, watching TV, listening to podcasts, and—you guessed it—cooking.
“Also, my boyfriend and I adopted a rescue kitten a few weeks ago, so I’m enjoying getting to know her as she takes over our place.”
Even with a schedule jam-packed with work and free time activities, Devyn has carved out time to give back to the community. “I volunteered for an immigration non-profit that helped legal permanent residents apply for citizenship, which I really liked. I hope to be able to find other volunteer opportunities soon.”
When asked if she has a favorite quote that helps explain who she is and what she believes in, Devyn responds without hesitation: “A positive attitude is contagious, but don’t wait to catch it from others. Be a carrier.”
