Take Action During Suicide Prevention Month

September 1, 2025

Suicide is a serious public health concern. Overall, suicide is the 11th leading cause of death. But its impact is particularly stark for certain groups of people. Numbers from recent years reveal that for:

  • Ages 10-14 and 25-34: Suicide was the second leading cause of death.
  • Ages 15-24: Suicide was the third leading cause of death.
  • Ages 35-44: Suicide was the fourth leading cause of death.

September is National Suicide Prevention Month. The goals are to raise awareness of suicide prevention, promote hope, and help people experiencing suicidal thoughts.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) says this is “a moment that serves as a powerful reminder that there are steps we all must take in looking out for loved ones, the people in our community, and those who have been impacted by this leading cause of death.”

Here’s how you can take action:

  • Educate yourself and others: Learn about suicide prevention, warning signs and risk factors.
  • Spread awareness: Share information about suicide prevention on social media and engage in conversations about mental health.
  • Support those in need: Reach out to friends, family, and colleagues, offering support and encouraging them to seek help if needed.
  • Volunteer: Support suicide prevention organizations like AFSP through volunteer efforts, fundraising events, or advocacy work.

By actively participating in Suicide Prevention Month and supporting year-round initiatives, you can help reduce the stigma surrounding suicide, provide support to those who are struggling, and ultimately save lives.
